| I love painting flowers because they are small, intricate and not easily seen in only one glance. A flower in bloom will challenge me to completely stop and pay attention, to take the time to look into its very heart and discover its essence. By looking closely, I may find an abstract pattern made by a cluster of azalea blooms or a deep golden glow at the center of a calla lily. The essence may reveal itself in the way shadows turn the inner petals of a sunflower from yellow to deep orange, or how a lotus bends toward the light. I feel a sense of urgency in this discovery because I know the flower will be wilted soon and forever gone. During the fleeting time it is fully alive, the flower inspires me to give it my full attention, to capture that moment on canvas and to share it with others. |
